The origins of this town goes back to the Middle Ages, though the area was inhabited by Samnite populations in the 4th century B.C. It rises abong lovely beech and oak woods. Noble families such as the Ruffo, the D'Aquino, the Cavaniglia and the Doria from Angria governed till 1806. For all those who enjoy nature, Montella is a wonderful place to visit. The oak, beech, elm and maple woods are rich of mushrooms and truffles. There are also good quality chestnuts and many types of herbs. In 1997 a scout international meeting was held here.
